2nd Tyrnavos Theatre Festival, 6–8 November, free entry

Most people know Tyrnavos, a small town near Larissa, for tsipouro and its Bourani carnival. In November the town hands its stage to theatre, with the 2nd Theatre Festival organised by the Municipality of Tyrnavos and the Region of Thessaly. For three days, from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November, the Municipal Theatre of Tyrnavos opens for two plays for adults, one for children and a workshop. Entry is free to everything.

The programme

Friday 6 November. From 17:00 to 19:30 the theatre workshop «From the body to speech» is led by director and actor Dimitris Tsikouras. The official opening is at 20:30, and at 21:00 comes «The Message» by Argyris Chionis, directed by Anthi Founta, who performs it with Antonis Kyriakakis.

Saturday 7 November. The workshop continues at the same hours, 17:00 to 19:30. At 21:00 Thanasis Saliampouchos performs «Fly» by Stella Zafeiropoulou, directed by Dimitris Tsoumanis.

Sunday 8 November. At 12:00 noon it is the children's turn, with «The Princess – who got bored of being a princess», written and directed by Aglaia Naka and performed by Grigoria Oikonomaki.

Small plays, close to the stage

Both evening plays are small in scale: two actors in «The Message», one in «Fly». Argyris Chionis was a Greek poet and prose writer.

In the workshop, participants explore through theatre exercises how body, movement and speech connect. Registration is required, through the form the Municipality of Tyrnavos has posted on tirnavos.gr.

Tyrnavos in November

If you come from Larissa, the drive is short. Before the Friday or Saturday play there is time for a walk in the centre and a tsipouro. For the town itself, its hammam and its stories, read our article on Tyrnavos. And if your first encounter with Tyrnavos was the carnival, read about the Bourani. The Sunday children's play is at midday, so it fits easily into a day trip with children.
