Three sonatas, one pianist and no charge at the door. On Tuesday 27 October, at 20:00, Charalampos Angelopoulos plays Beethoven in the hall of the Larissa Municipal Conservatory. The recital is organised by the culture department of the Municipality of Larissa and the Conservatory, and entry is free.
What you will hear
The programme is devoted entirely to Beethoven, with three sonatas written one after another:
- Sonata in A-flat major, Op. 26, which opens unusually, with a theme and variations, and has a funeral march as its third movement
- Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 27 No. 1, marked «Quasi una fantasia», where the movements join into one continuous story
- Sonata in D major, Op. 28, the «Pastoral», bright and song-like
The concert is also a first step towards 2027, when 200 years will have passed since the composer's death.
Who is playing
Charalampos Angelopoulos studied piano in Thessaloniki and continued, with a scholarship from the L. Voudouris Foundation, at the Cologne University of Music, where he earned a soloist's diploma with distinction. He did postgraduate studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He has given recitals and played with orchestras in Europe, North Africa, Turkey and Japan, and has worked with, among others, the Athens State Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and the ERT National Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Piandaemonium ensemble and since 2012 has organised the Thessaloniki Piano Festival.
Music in a city of the plain
A free recital is a good reason for anyone who has never been to a piano concert to try one. The three sonatas of the evening show three different sides of Beethoven: reflection and dramatic tension, freedom of imagination, lyricism and calm.
If you want more Beethoven this week, on Saturday 24 October at 18:00 the 42nd Horto Festival on Pelion closes with one of his trios for piano, violin and cello, together with Brahms. For Larissa, arrive a little before 20:00 to find a seat without rushing.
