New hiking trail opens in Sykourio today

The meeting point is the Ossa Bridge, this afternoon at 17:30. The Municipality of Tempi is handing over the new, upgraded hiking trail in Sykourio, and invites residents, walkers and nature lovers to be the first to walk it.

Tuesday's programme

The event starts at 17:30 with a blessing. Then the ribbon is cut and the trail is officially presented. At 18:00 the first group walk sets off, so that people can get to know the route. The event closes with traditional treats for everyone taking part.

  • Meeting point: Ossa Bridge, Sykourio
  • Day: Tuesday 20 October 2026
  • What to wear: comfortable clothes, with sports or hiking shoes

The walk starts in the late afternoon and it gets dark early at the end of October, so a small torch or a charged phone in your pocket is a good idea.

What we know about the route

Today's announcements give no name or length for the trail. The Ossa Bridge, however, is the starting point of the walking trail «Ossa Bridge – Bara of Sykourio». In June it was still a building site, when the mayor of Tempi, Giorgos Manolis, visited together with the head of the Technical Services, Georgia Chadoulou. Its total length, as the municipality gave it at the time, is 1,504.81 metres, about a kilometre and a half. The municipality's presentation before the walk should make it clear.

The municipality presents the project as a way to show off the natural setting around the town and bring more walkers to the area, with infrastructure that respects the landscape.

Sykourio, at the foot of Ossa

Sykourio sits at the foot of Ossa, the mountain the people of Larissa call Kissavos, about 20 kilometres north-east of Larissa. In the 2021 census it had 1,883 inhabitants. From here the plain starts to climb towards the slopes, and a little further north the Pineios enters the Vale of Tempe.

A trail next to a town on the plain has its own value. It is often a place's first contact with hiking, before the longer mountain routes.

If you are coming from Larissa, set off before 17:00 so you can find parking and be at the bridge for the blessing.
