Most visitors to Larissa know its great ancient theatre. Fewer know that the city has a second one, smaller and later than the first, inside the modern town.
A footprint in the grass
From street level the Second Ancient Theatre looks like a quiet archaeological site among apartment blocks. From above, though, the picture changes: the semicircle of the auditorium and the foundations of the stage building are drawn cleanly on the grass, like an architect's plan.
In spring the site fills with yellow wildflowers and the outline of the theatre stands out even more.
Two theatres, one city
Having two theatres says a great deal about the importance of ancient Larissa as the centre of Thessaly. If you have time, walk from one to the other: it is a short stroll through today's centre, over many layers of history.
