20th Photography November in Volos, two exhibitions until 13/11

The street is the theme of both exhibitions opening tonight in Volos. The Photographic Club of Volos is holding its 20th «Photography November» this year, and marking 20 years since it became a cultural association, in 2006. The opening is on Wednesday 4 November at 19:30, at the Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre, 3 Metamorfoseos Street.

The two exhibitions

The first shows the photographs that won distinctions in the 17th Panhellenic Photography Contest «Dimitris Letsios», on the theme «Everything is a road». 85 photographers took part with 324 works. The jury met on 17 October and gave first prize to Myrto Kaiopoulou for «Reflections on glass», second to Thanasis Tsilingoudis and third to Spyros Sansonetis. The awards are presented on the opening night. According to the Region, the exhibition has 40 photographs. It is organised by the Regional Unit of Magnesia and the Northern Sporades together with the Club, and curated by Leon Mourtzoukos.

The second is the group exhibition of the Club's members, «Art on the Street»: 29 exhibitors with 82 works, curated by Leon Mourtzoukos and Argyris Rousogiannis.

When to see them

The exhibitions are open from 4 to 13 November. The gallery opens Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00, and on Wednesday and Thursday also in the afternoon, 17:00 to 20:00. No weekend hours are given, so if you are coming from another town, choose a weekday. The exhibitions are supported by the Volos Municipality's Deputy Mayor's office for Culture and Museums.

A few words of our own

A contest in its 17th year and an event in its 20th November say something about a town: that a group of people keeps an amateur love of photography alive, year after year. Volos gives easy subjects to anyone holding a camera, from the waterfront and the tsipouro places to the Pelion villages above the town. If you don't know it, read our article on Volos, between Pelion and the Pagasetic Gulf.

And if you are in town in the morning, leave time for the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum, with finds from Sesklo to Demetrias.
