There is something about an open-air cinema that no indoor theatre can copy. The breeze carrying the scent of jasmine. The crunch of roasted seeds. The sky darkening just as the screen lights up.
Yellow chairs
We photographed the Municipality of Larissa's open-air cinema just before the screening began: rows of yellow director's chairs, an aisle down the middle and the screen among the trees. From above, the space looks like a small island of light in the dark city.
A tradition that endures
Open-air cinemas are one of the best-loved parts of the Greek summer. In a city on the plain, with its warm evenings, they are also a reason to leave the house, meet the neighbours and watch a film the way your parents did.
The programme is announced every summer by the Municipality.
